Weekly Collection Overview

Residential trash collection in Somerville is provided weekly by Jersey Specialized Hauling. To ensure your items are collected, please have your containers at the curb by 7:00 AM on your designated collection day.

Container Requirements (Updated April 2026)

Please ensure your containers meet these specific standards:

Container Type: Sturdy plastic container designed to be lifted by mechanical truck arm.
Maximum Capacity: 96 gallons (Suggested: 32, 64, or 96-gallon sizes).
Maximum Weight: 70 lbs when full.
Limit: Maximum of 2 containers per household.
Lids: Lids are not required. If your container has a non-flip lid, please remove it before placing it at the curb.

Preparation & Disposal Rules

Following these guidelines ensures that your waste is collected safely and efficiently:

Liquid Disposal: All garbage must be drained of liquids before being placed in the bin.
Glass: Place non-recyclable broken glass in a secure, rigid container.
Ashes: Strictly prohibited in the trash.
Yard Waste: Small grass clippings in paper bags are permitted with your regular trash (counts toward your 4-bag limit). Note: Call (908) 704-7195 to schedule yard waste pickup.
Bulk Items: Large appliances (refrigerators, stoves), beds, and metal items are not collected with regular weekly trash. Please purchase bulk pickup stickers for these items.

Holiday & Delay Schedule

If your collection day falls on one of the following holidays in 2026 or 2027, your trash will be picked up the next business day.

Troubleshooting Collection Issues

If your trash was left at the curb, it may be due to one of the following reasons:

Container exceeded the 70 lb. weight limit.
More than 2 containers were placed at the curb.
Yard waste (leaves, branches) or prohibited recyclables were found in the bin.
Service was impacted by a holiday or severe weather condition

You’d think spending over 1k with a business for a dumpster rental the customer service would at the very least be informative. They were rude from start to finish. Lacked communication, picked up before we were done project-didn’t even ask if we were finished or wanted to extend. More expensive than their comps and very rude. Wouldn’t recommend.

Based on a recommendation by a neighbor, I rented a dumpster from Jersey Specialized Hauling a couple of weeks ago when I was having poison ivy removed from my back yard. The sales staff were very knowledgeable and friendly and answered all my questions. When the dumpster arrived my wife and I were impressed by how clean it looked. And it smelled as clean as it looked!  I showed my son, who lives in Virginia, a photo and without any prompting from me he also commented about how clean it looked. I had the dumpster for almost a week, and it was removed in as timely a fashion as it was delivered. In other words, the whole experience went off without a hitch. I give Jersey Specialized Hauling my most enthusiastic recommendation, and I plan to use them again in a future cleanup.
